All of the charts are five trombones (4 tenors - bass trombone) and rhythm section except for the Secret Sharer which is six trombones and rhythm. The trombone section was recorded as a group and there is no mixing of seperate parts. The result is a natural section sound that you would hear at a live performance.
The recording opens with My Favorite Things. This arrangement is a vehicle to play high, loud and fast! It opens in a hard afro-cuban groove and moves to a fast swing. It twists back and fourth between the two styles and finally ends where it started. Arranged by Matt Niess.
Autumn Leaves is a salsa arrangement by Alfredo Mojica. I played lead in his salsa band (with a four bone section) for several years. Listen to Dave Kane playing great latin jazz piano.
The Secret Sharer is an original by Conrad Herwig. It was written especially for this recording and is the most progressive composition on the CD. It is a true reflection of his talent. Conrad is one of the most influential jazz trombonists I have ever heard.
Sno Peas is arranged by Mike Tomaro. As you will hear, Mike is an exceptionally talented arranger and composer. The 3/4 medium swing contains complex rhythms that are create an unusual feel. It is composed of mostly minor chords that produce a beautiful mystic tune.
Sugar is an arrangement that I did to feature our bass trombonist Don Sheehan. It is a hard medium shuffle in the style of "Groovin' Hard". It contains unison and harmonized solis and a screaming shout section.
Tears In Her Eyes is a Mike Tomaro composition. This medium bossa nova sounds as though it could have been written by Antonio Carlos Jobim. The range of the melody is extreme and the section writing is excellent.
(It's only a) Paper Moon is arranged by Jim Roberts. This is one of my favorite swing tunes in the book. Jim takes advantage of the bass bone, using it as a walking bass line. Check out Jim's bass solo, Harry Watters on the trombone and the chorale at the end.
Out On A Whim is another Mike Tomaro original. It is a subtle funk tune with intricate lines and a very hip soli section. It feature Jim Roberts going nuts on guitar and myself on trombone.
Misty is an arrangement that I did for a local salsa band "Tentacion", which most of us in the group have played with. That horn section was three bones but I expanded it to five for the Capitol Bones. Special thanks to Tony Nalker for writing the balad intro to this in the style of Emory Remington.
